Temperatures in my just finished upstairs Cape Cod were overwhelming. Temperatures behind the knee walls in the attic section would reach close to 140 degrees. Plenty of insulation, soffit and ridge vents were simply not enough to cool the attic under the massive roof on my home. The brand new central A/C unit upstairs ran non-stop. I was a little apprehensive about putting a fan on the roof of my home after reading reviews about the noise they make and how these fans won't work well with a ridge vent close by. For my particular situation this fan works very well. The installation was suprisingly easy and took about two hours. I was working on a 9/12 pitch roof. My roof trusses are on 16 inch centers, so I installed extra 2x6 horizontal blocking top and bottom of the hole. Then screwed the plywood around the hole into the blocking. I believe this will minimize the noise and vibration of these fans by securing the plywood supporting the fan, especially if your trusses are on...Read more

Had it operating for the whole summer in NJ with a dark shingled roof. Does the job. A little on the noisy side compared to previous fan with same rating. Strangely got quieter after a couple months of use. The noise was a mild hum heard in the living space below. As with any other fan of this type I suggest inspecting and oiling the motor bushings after three years of service or you'll be replacing the unit after 5 years. I managed to get fifteen years out of my first fan with re-oiling but I let it lapse one time where the bushings started to seize. I re-oiled but with loose bushings the noise became objectionable requiring a new unit.

I replaced a failed, 7 year-old, Master Flow unit in my detached garage with this. It has a smaller fan and only 4 blades(the Master Flow had 5). It moves a lot of air, but the noise is considerably louder than the Master Flow. I don't think I would put this on the roof of a house due to the noise factor. It costs about $50 less than the master Flow, and seems well built, but if you're going to ventilate your house attic, I would stick with the Master Flow for lower noise.
